Does 105.1 Need A Sports Team To Be Successful?

todayslogoAbsolutely not and anyone who suggests that is does has no clue about Sports Radio.

The only thing a sports station needs to win is talented on-air personalities, that is where it begins and that is where it ends.  Sports Radio is built on larger than life personalities, guys who are passionate and emotional about the teams they cover for a living.  That is precisely why the flash point for this sports radio battle will be in Afternoon Drive.  It will pit the two best Air Personalities against one another….Drew Lane vs. Mike Valenti.

Before we discuss that battle, let’s address the play-by-play question.

I’ll let you in on a little secret, play-by-play for the most part is a money losing proposition.  Many of the stations around the country ONLY sign teams as an ego trip.  Some play-by-play can get you ratings, but you rarely get both….most station do not make a dime on play-by-play.

In Detroit, 97.1 could do without the Lions, Tigers, Red Wings and Pistons and be just fine.  The teams that move the needle in Detroit are the Lions, Tigers and Michigan Football.  WXYT just got a 2 share point bump from Tiger baseball, but they were still at a very healthy 4.5 without baseball.

105.1 won’t have a team, at least not in the beginning stages, but they will have TALENT in PM Drive to compete against Valenti, Drew Lane is the X-factor in all this, NOT play-by-play.

If Drew does what Drew has always done, he will make an impact.  I’m not sure he will beat Mike Valenti, but he will take a sizable chunk of the ratings in PM Drive.  For all the complaints about Mike, he has tremendous sports knowledge and is entertaining, even if it’s angry sounding.  There will be a distinct difference in the two shows.  Drew’s will be way more light-hearted and entertaining, while Valenti’s will be more sports and more anger.

Valenti wins on sports knowledge, but Drew can always fill that void with guests and “experts,” this hurts Valenti because he can’t have guests on his show.  Mike’s handicapped by calls from Bob in Roseville.  I think the “caller driven,” format will get some tweaking as soon as the competition announces its intentions to flip to sports.

I personally think this PM Drive battle will be a riot to watch, will Detroit choose the angry young man or the cool laid back dude?

Drew and Mike Update On 105.1

Wow, in the couple of hours since i last posted on Drew and Mike to 105.1, I’ve been inundated with information.

I have it on solid sources that Drew and Mike to 105.1 is NOT happening. Drew to 105.1 is happening.

My sources confirm that Mike’s absence from the “DrewCast” is intentional and the duo may not work together again.

So, rejoice Drew fans, there is something happening with ESPN and Drew in Detroit.  It may take a while to complete this deal, but it is happening.

It’s going to be a rough road for Sports on 105.1, but it is a doable proposition with Drew Lane on board.

And….why does Drew play “Abracadabra” by Steve Miller to start his podcast?  Is he hinting at turning up on a station known as “Magic?”  Help me out conspiracy theorists?

Local Web Site Says 105.1 Is Going Sports With Drew and Mike

I have no inside knowledge of this deal, but local Detroit Web Site “Detroit Sports Rag” says on its twitter account it has a source who claims 105.1 FM in Detroit is flipping to sports with Drew and Mike in Afternoon drive.

A couple of things….

  • Detroit Sports Rag usually is right with good sources.
  • I am considered a “mortal enemy and a racist” so I don’t follow Detroit Sports Rag; I was relying on re-tweets to see what they were reporting.

According to Detroit Sports Rag….

Greater Media is in the process of obtaining the ESPN brand from 1090 a.m., which makes complete sense as that is exactly what we did in Philadelphia at 950/95.7 in 2008.  I was already gone, but that was the plan we put in place.

Greater Media knows they need a “huge” name in PM Drive to make it work and Drew and Mike would provide that, with Mike and Mike in AM Drive.  They would also likely put a live midday show on as well as a presence at night.

Detroit Sports Rag may be onto something, but as I said, I have no sources, just my thoughts and opinions as a former Detroit Programmer who actually ran a Greater Media sports outlet in Philadelphia.  This could get interesting as Drew and Mike appear to have a solid relationship with Greater Media.  I can’t imaging them being as restrained in their podcast if this was a bad parting.

Looks like Greater Media is going to try to lock down AM Drive with men in Detroit with WCSX, WRIF and 105.1.

According to loyal Drew and Mike listener, as soon as I tweeted how loyal Drew and Mike listeners were, I got a follow from 105.1

Hmmm, why is 105.1 following Drew and Mike loyalists?
