Bob Wojnowski is one of the best sports journalists in America. If you have lived in Detroit you already know that he is measured, experienced and entertaining. He’s a very thoughtful journalist who doesn’t take his column or his opinions lightly. That is why you should see the end of the Rich Rod era at Michigan just by reading Wojo’s latest column.
It is one thing to read the national pundits who really don’t know anything about Michigan football and think Rodriguez will be fired, it is quite another thing to read it from one of the more rational Michigan writers.
In his column “Rich Rodriguez Needs To Go if Buckeyes Whip Wolverines Again,” Wojo calls it as evenly as any I’ve ever seen. He is right, Michigan hasn’t done anything under Rich Rod and Jim Harbaugh’s availability will force Michigan’s hand after another loss to Ohio State Saturday.
Face it, Rodriguez doesn’t scare anybody in the Big Ten, MSU, OSU, Wisconsin and Notre Dame all have owned the Wolverines under Rich Rod and that has to change.
If Harbaugh arrives in Ann Arbor, new Athletic Director David Brandon will send a huge message that Michigan intends to win again and quickly. As a “Michigan Man” Harbaugh brings the ability to unify the warring Michigan factions and restore Michigan football to glory on the field. He’s a smart guy who will be in demand this winter; Michigan is his first love and they need to act now to insure they don’t blow this like they did the Les Miles hire three years ago.
My sources told me the same thing that Wojo discussed in his column and know who I talked to, I am confident that Wojo knows everything I know and more about the Michigan Head Coaching situation.
I hate like hell that Rodriguez left his alma mater to come from Michigan, I understand why he did it, but he belongs at West Virgina and he can’t go back. Rich Rod is a good guy with an edgy personality, he didn’t come to Michigan to mess up the program and I believe given time he would make Michigan proud, but that isn’t how it works in big time college football.
Personally I don’t even think a Michigan win changes Brandon’s mind if Harbaugh leaves Stanford. Harbaugh belongs to Michigan and Michigan belongs to him, expect him to roam the sidelines at Michigan next fall unless he stays at Stanford and waits another year for Michigan to fire Rich Rod. If he is leaving Stanford, it is for Michigan.
